Progress and Pragmatism

Earlier today, the Government announced that it would extend the HPV Vaccine to boys as well as girls as it currently stands. This is very welcome news and something I have long campaigned for alongside fellow colleagues and HPV Action (http://www.hpvaction.org/).

In April I urged the Government to implement this - highlighting that it is a matter of pure and simple mathematics. The prospect of 100% of any age cohort - male and female - getting the vaccination means that herd immunity will develop much faster. The Government's response to this campaign will have a positive effect.

I spoke out in favour of vaccinating both young boys and girls for HPV, and not just relying on vaccinating girls as we currently do.

It is a matter of pure and simple mathematics. If 100% of any age cohort - male and female - gets the vaccination, the herd immunity develops much faster than just relying on vaccinating up to 50% of that cohort.

The key point is to get herd immunity for everyone far faster. It seems to me blindingly obvious, in medical terms, public terms and cost terms, that the sooner that happens, the better.

I hope that the Government will take appreciate the urgency with which we need to protect our youngest generations and protect the future of our population.

SIR PETER CAMPAIGNED ALONGSIDE COLLEAGUES TO BRING FORWARDS LEGISLATION TO VACCINATE YOUNG BOYS AS WELL AS YOUNG GIRLS AGAINST THE HPV.

THE CAMPAIGN WAS SUCCESSFUL AND GOVERNMENT LEGISLATION HAS BEEN BROUGHT FORWARDS TO ENACT THE CHANGE.
