Sir Peter meeting with the Parliamentary Group for Women's Health

Too often, females have been overlooked in the development of health policy in the UK and across the world. Whether in designing car seat belts, testing the strengths and efficacy of medicines, and in allocating resources for specific conditions, health policy has historically focused on the ailments of men.

If medical issues for women throughout life had received as much attention as for men, lives would be better.

I support the Parliamentary Group for Women’s Health and was pleased to join with them recently in Parliament.

Many will know that I have long supported equal and fair access to healthcare for all with a focus on compassionate healthcare to support those in need led by those who know. I continue to encourage colleagues from across the house to join with me in supporting evidence-based policymaking.

On matters like family planning and abortion rights, it is not for us to pass moral judgment but rather to be sensible, sensitive and realistic. The choice is always between compassion and politics.

Let us continue to show compassion and put first the interests of women and girls where it matters most.
