Yevgeny Prigozhin
My response regarding concerns about Yevgeny Prigozhin and the Wagner Group
February 2023
The government strongly condemns Russia's actions in Ukraine, and stands in support with the people of Ukraine.
In regards to the case of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the government is unable to comment on individual cases and therefore I do not believe that I can comment either.
In accordance with the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI), everyone has a right to legal representation.
OFSI grants licences to allow sanctioned people to cover their own legal fees, provided that the costs are reasonable. Although, it is possible for frozen assets to be used to pay for that legal representation.
Proper legal representation is a key part of our justice system. Even those who we feel have committed awful crimes must be given due process.
However in light of recent evidence, the Treasury is examining whether the correct approach was used with Prigozhin.
Ministers have promised to update Parliament and I am observing the situation as it develops.
Thank you again for contacting me.
