Singe-Use Vapes Harming Our Seas

Sir Peter Bottomley posing with an article headline describing the harm of single-use vapes

Single-use vapes are quickly becoming a scourge of our streets and our seas. They are becoming one of the largest and most dangerous forms of litter, washing into our open waters and putting animals needlessly at risk.

E-cigarettes can be a great tool for helping people to quit or reduce their smoking, we support this. However, disposable single-use vapes are fast becoming big cause of litter and unrecyclable waste, and the internal batteries can be a dangerous fire hazard in our waste systems.

Research from Material Focus suggests the number of disposable vapes being discarded each week has increased to five million in the past year.

An RSPCA survey - part of its #VexedAboutVapes campaign - showed 94% of respondents supported a ban on disposable vapes.

I support legislation to put an end to these polluting and dangerous items. We must put an end to this avoidable harm to our environment, to our public spaces and to our waste system.
